UAE nuclear power plant reactors are 75% complete, says ENEC

The Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC) said on Saturday construction of units 1 to 4 at Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant are 75 percent complete.

The plant’s four reactors are scheduled to come online in 2020, with construction having started in 2012. The facility will deliver up to 25 percent of the UAE’s electricity needs and save up to 12 million tonnes in carbon emissions every year.

“All construction milestones for the Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant project have been achieved in accordance with the highest standards of quality and safety,” said Mohamed Al Hammadi, chief executive officer, ENEC.

According to the company, it has successfully set in place of unit 3’s reactor containment building (RCB) liner dome section, effectively installing the roof of the structure which now houses the reactor vessel (RV). Further, unit 4’s turbine generator operating deck and the last reactor containment liner plate rings have been achieved.

The work has been done in collaboration with Korean Electric Power Corporation, a prime contractor and joint venture partner.

With the setting of unit 3’s RCB liner dome section, it is now more than 62 percent complete. The completion of RCB is expected in the first quarter of 2017, while the construction of unit 4 is 35 percent complete and “ahead of schedule”, the company said.
