The Lamborghini Terzo Millennio is a dream concept car exploring the possibilities of electrified supercars of the future, that can repair their own carbon fibre

Last month Auto Middle East spoke to Lamborghini R&D boss Maurizio Reggiani at the company’s launch of the Huracán Super Trofeo Evo customer race car, and the man was adamant that naturally aspirated V12 engines have a long and prosperous future at Sant’Agata Bolognese.

We hope he speaks the truth, and knowing Reggiani, we have every reason to believe he doesn’t mince words, but even if we assume internal-combustion engines’ days are numbered things might not be so bad after all in the supercar world of tomorrow. At least, if Lamborghini’s latest study in partnership with the prestigious Massachusetts Institute of Technology is anything to go by.

The new Lamborghini Terzo Millennio is a ‘dream’ concept car meaning there is no chance of production whatsoever, but it does offer plenty of clues into possible future electrified Lamborghinis as the evolutionary name suggests – in English, it’s the Lamborghini Third Millennium.

Designed in-house by Lamborghini Centro Stile, the car takes into account advancing technologies such as an entirely new architecture prioritising high aerodynamics and low drag, and a new composite monocoque tub built in Lamborghini’s own carbon fibre plant.

Part of the Terzo Millennio’s purpose is development of new lightweight materials, as the car’s carbon fibre body secondarily acts as “an accumulator for energy storage” which means the entire bodyshell of the Lambo is actually a storage system. No, we have no idea how that works either

Then there’s the Terzo Millennio’s ‘self-healing’ capability, as the car is supposed to be able to detect cracks and carbon fibre damage, and repair itself with “via micro-channels filled with healing chemistries”.

Besides bulky battery packs, Lamborghini is more interested in the application of supercapacitors in its future supercars, which promise high power and high durability.

Naturally Lamborghini is all about the theater of the supercar, and the Terzo Millennio, with its responsive electric motors and four-wheel torque control, promises blistering performance combined with its active aerodynamics.

Finally, there’s also a Piloted Driving system on board that can take you around a lap of, say, Yas Marina autonomously to show you the ideal line before you take over yourself. Speaking of which, last month during our chat Reggiani also vehemently snubbed the idea of artificial intelligence in Lamborghinis, so now we don’t know what the hell to think.
