Trials have started for digital vehicle number plates from the month of May. This trial will go on until November, post which the cost would be calculated and announced. These trials are going on to find out if there are any technological glitches. These glitches are likely to occur because of the desert climate.

Sultan Abdullah al-Marzouqi, the head of the vehicle licensing department at Dubai’s RTA (Roads and transport authority) says that the digital number plates is going to make life easier for drivers in Dubai.

This latest new technology will make the real time communication with other drivers possible, if there is any accident, to get updates about traffic conditions and it is going to make the contact with the ambulance in case of emergency.

It will also help Dubai Police to control and catch hold of thefts happening as the plates will be displaying a visual alert if the vehicle plates get stolen.

Vehicles will be fitted with smart plates with digital screens, GPS and transmitters and the new plates will be able to inform emergency services if a driver meets an accident, the BBC reported.

Payments for fines and fees will also be done automatically since the user accounts will be linked to the number plate.
