Dubai RTA progressing with 3D printing technology

During the extraordinary circumstances imposed by the outbreak of the global COVID-19 pandemic, the Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has made substantial progress in manufacturing Dubai Metro spare parts using 3D printing technology.

In the manufacture of materials and spare parts needed for the metro and associated systems using 3D printing, RTA has been working with Serco, the Dubai Metro maintenance contractor.

Serco has developed many models for use in several fields, including trains, communication systems, and ticket vending machines, each considered to be the first of its kind in the region.

Expressing on the benefits of 3D printing technology, Mohammed Al Amiri, Director of Maintenance at RTA Rail Agency, said: "The technology prospered in delivering some spare parts for the metro in a record time that saved 90 percent of the time required by traditional means to source those parts." It saved 50 percent of the initial expense as well.

RTA is has consistently been fervent to apply the latest technologies, including 3D printing, to different processes. The drive is consistent with the 3D printing technique of Dubai.

Furthermore, during the lockdown through producing 'Face Strap Clips' and 'Button Pushers', RTA's maintenance teams have also provided assistance to frontline staff.

"In many projects and applications, the application of 3D printing supports in the development of new techniques and creative means that can effectively commit in making Dubai the smartest area in the world," Al Amiri said.

“All around the world, 3D printing is accelarating at an growing pace. As part of its efforts to use the best global practises of the public transport industry and the infrastructure needed, RTA aims to play a leading role in the development and optimal use of these technologies.

RTA and Serco collaborate under the MoU with a specialist firm designating the company as a technology partner in this area. The company has been instrumental in providing support for the development of the necessary components using 3D printing.

"RTA aim is to encourage the maintenance teams through the use of cutting-edge 3D printing technology and increase the life cycle of properties as well," Amiri concluded.
