Oman to Host 25-GW Wind-Solar Complex for Green Hydrogen Production

An international tie-up on 18th May 2021 laid out plans for the construction of a 25 GW wind-solar complex in Oman that will power the production of “millions of tonnes” of green hydrogen each year.

The association behind the ambitious project includes Oman’s national energy company OQ, green fuels developer InterContinental Energy and Enertech, a Kuwait government backed clean energy investor and developer. Their plan is to build the huge complex in Al Wusta governorate, central Oman.

Although the exact location of the project was not specified, the partners said the site has an "optimal diurnal profile of strong wind at night and reliable sun during the day," while its proximity to the coast will enable seawater intake for the electrolysis.

The green hydrogen could be used either on site or exported directly, or converted into green ammonia for international export. The output is intended to be sold via long-term sales agreements. According to the partners, the proposed facility is “well positioned to offer a secure and reliable supply of green fuels globally at a highly competitive price.”

The trio has been conducting analysis on the wind and solar conditions in Al Wusta governorate since year 2019.
