A significant water provider in the country has introduced a novel, recycled-plastic water bottle. (rPET).

The novel 100% rPET bottle is being made by Al Ain Water and is the first of its kind to be made in the UAE.

PET is a highly recyclable plastic, and when it is recycled, it transforms into rPET, a substance that is robust, long-lasting and infinitely recyclable and is frequently used to package foods and beverages. rPET can be recycled and used to create fresh plastic bottles and other products. It saves energy and resources, promotes the recycling sector and keeps these polymers out of landfills.

According to Global Standards, rPET has a superior overall ecological balance than glass and single-use aluminium cans because it uses 75% less energy during production and produces 75% fewer CO2 emissions.

Alan Smith, Chief Executive Officer, Agthia Group, stated: “We have been in active conversations with the UAE government and other stakeholders to develop a system for the collecting, recycling and reuse of PET-based packaging. We are happy to see the results of our endeavors.

A growing variety of sustainably packaged water bottles are available from Al Ain Water, including the region's first 100 percent plant-based bottle that decomposes entirely and can be composted in just 80 days.
