Masdar and the Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC) have announced the start of the world's first large-scale, 24-hour gigascale project in Abu Dhabi, marking a significant advancement in renewable energy.
This innovative idea intends to deliver continuous renewable energy 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, by combining solar electricity with battery storage.
Mohamed Hassan Alsuwaidi, the Minister of Investment and CEO of ADQ, and Dr. Sultan Al Jaber, the UAE Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology, made the announcement at Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week.
The UAE's status as a leader in renewable energy innovation is strengthened by this milestone, which is regarded as a significant step in the worldwide clean energy revolution.
The project is the largest combined solar and battery energy storage system in the world, with a colossal 5.2 gigawatt solar photovoltaic plant and a 19 gigawatt-hour battery storage system that will provide up to 1 gigawatt of baseload power every day.
"This project offers a solution to ensure continuous, clean power generation," Dr. Al Jaber said, noting the significance of overcoming the intermittency barrier in renewable energy.
Over 10,000 new jobs and economic growth are anticipated as a result of the effort, which will also set a global standard for technological innovation in solar power and energy storage.
Additionally, the facility will improve grid efficiency and stability, resolving the intermittent challenges that have long limited the use of renewable energy.
