Chad's First Large-Scale 50 MW Solar PV Plant Inaugurated by GSU

The Noor Chad 50 MW Solar PV Plant in N'Djamena was inaugurated by Abu Dhabi-based Global South Utilities (GSU), the nation's first project of such size in the renewable energy industry. The project is expected to provide 274,000 houses with clean electricity.

GSU CEO and Managing Director Ali Alshimmari, UAE Ambassador to Chad Rashid Al Shamsi, and Mahamat Ahmad Alhabo, Minister of State and Secretary-General of the Presidency of the Republic of Chad, were among the ministers that attended the inauguration ceremony.

It is anticipated that the plant, which has a 5 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS), will displace about 1.36 million tonnes of carbon dioxide during its lifetime. The project will be run by GSU and will provide dependable, large-scale renewable power, reducing Chad's reliance on imported fuel.

"This is the first project in Africa that we have completed from signing to commissioning," Alshimmari stated. “It demonstrates how swiftly these markets can develop when there is willpower and productive collaboration. This project is really about people and empowering families, communities, and countries to prosper with the stability that clean power provides."

More than 81,000 solar panels and 158 inverters were installed throughout the project, which was finished in record time and featured more than 350,000 safe labor hours. Noor Chad is part of the UAE's larger clean energy portfolio throughout Africa and will serve as a model for future renewable projects in the nation, according to GSU, demonstrating the UAE's dedication to sustainable development in the Global South.
