The summit of G20 leaders took place in Johannesburg, South Africa. It gathered together 20 leaders to discuss diverse global concerns, according to sources. UAE Minister of State Saeed Bin Mubarak Al Hajeri was present. However, Cyril Ramaphosa, the president of South Africa and the summit's host, invited him.
Minister Hajeri introduced the “AI for development initiative.” It seeks to integrate AI technology to areas such as education, healthcare, and climate adaption across Africa. Additionally, a $1 billion commitment to assist nations in developing the infrastructure required for AI supports the initiative.
Minister Hajeri stated that his country views AI not only as an emerging industry but as a key foundation for humanity’s future. He noted, that the nation is rapidly advancing innovation to boost productivity and support major progress in the global economy, with a strong focus on developing responsible and inclusive AI that benefits everyone.
Over the last four years, starting in 2020, the UAE has already made over $118 billion in investments across the continent. Its capital, Abu Dhabi, also aims to establish a 10-square-mile UAE-U.S. AI Campus, to be developed by Emirati AI Company, G42, in conjunction with the U.S., Data Center Dynamics says.
Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said the agreement marks a significant step toward fulfilling President Trump’s vision for U.S. leadership in AI, noting that it extends the world’s leading American technology stack to a key strategic partner in the region.
“Today’s agreement is a testament to the ongoing collaboration between our countries in artificial intelligence. It is a statement of the UAE’s commitment to pioneering innovation and promoting worldwide collaboration in artificial intelligence, boosting the UAE’s position as a hub for cutting-edge research and sustainable development, yielding transformative benefits for humanity.”
